Sapna Bhandari: Navigating Life with Two Kids, One Special Angel

Motherhood is a profound and transformative experience for any woman. It’s a journey filled with love, joy, challenges, and sacrifices. This is the story of Sapna, a remarkable mother who embarked on a unique path, raising two beautiful children—one of whom is a special child. Over the past 12 years, Sapna has shown incredible strength, resilience, and love, and her decision to have a second child was not made lightly. Her journey is an inspiration to all mothers, and she has a powerful message to share with young mothers.

The birth of her first child, Kevin.

Sapna’s journey into motherhood began with the birth of her first child, Kevin. She embraced the sleepless nights and the endless diaper changes with grace, but life had more challenges in store for her.

When Kevin was just around 8-9 months old, Sapna and her husband felt that something was amiss. It was not until Kevin turned 4 years old, they got the diagnosis. He was diagnosed with William Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder and their lives changed forever.

Sapna faced a whirlwind of emotions, from denial and grief to determination and hope. This was the beginning of her journey as a mother of a special child.

Sapna’s love for Kevin knew no bounds. She became an advocate, tirelessly seeking the best therapies and support for her son. Her journey was marked by countless therapy sessions, doctor’s appointments, and a newfound understanding of the power of love and patience. She was also determined to aid other parents who were navigating similar waters without adequate guidance or information.

In 2016, she initiated a WhatsApp support group to provide parents a platform to share their concerns and invite others to accompany them on their journey.

A decision that surprised many…

As Sapna navigated the challenges of raising a special child, she and her husband made a decision that surprised many: they decided to have a second child. This was not a decision taken lightly; rather, it was a choice rooted in their love for each other and their unwavering belief in the power of her family.

The birth of Khushali, Sapna’s second child, brought immense joy to the family. Sapna’s heart swelled with love for both her children. She knew that life would be different, juggling the needs of both kids, but she was ready to face the challenges head-on.

Raising two children with different needs was a delicate balancing act. Sapna divided her time and attention between Kevin’s therapy sessions and Khushali’s infant care, often sacrificing her own needs for the sake of her family. She mastered the art of multitasking and found support from friends and family. She firmly believes that “you can’t pour from an empty cup,” so she ensured that she would delegate some of her duties and take care of her own well-being as well.

Sapna’s journey was not without setbacks. There were moments of frustration, exhaustion, and doubt. Yet, she persevered. She built resilience and found strength in the small victories. Each time Kevin made progress, it was a celebration for the entire family.

Acceptance as a key element in Sapna’s journey

Through the years, Sapna learned that acceptance was a key element in her journey. She accepted Kevin for who he was, with all his quirks and challenges. Sapna also learned to accept the help and support from those around her, and to accept herself as a mother who was doing her best. She understands that there can be days when things don’t go as per the plan but eventually you will sail through it gleefully if you learn to be compassionate, empathetic, and just be little kinder to all.

Her message to young mothers facing their unique challenges

As Sapna reflects on her beautiful journey of motherhood, she has a powerful message for young mothers facing their own unique challenges. She believes that every mother is stronger and more capable than she realizes. Sapna encourages young mothers to:

  • Embrace the journey: Motherhood is a beautiful and messy adventure. Embrace the ups and downs, as they all contribute to your growth as a mother.
  • Seek support: Don’t be afraid to ask for help or lean on friends and family. You don’t have to do it all on your own.
  • Believe in your children: Every child is unique and special in their own way. Believe in their potential and celebrate their achievements, no matter how small.
  • Prioritize self-care: Taking care of yourself is not selfish; it’s essential. You can’t pour from an empty cup, so make sure to fill your own cup first.
  • Find joy in the journey: Amidst the challenges, find moments of joy, laughter, and love. These are the moments that make motherhood beautiful.
